The story goes such that I happen to meet this tiny tot at a village near Talegaon (which itself is a small town) near Pune,Maharashtra,India. I am a MBBS graduate and in the curriculum, we are taught about the various programmed held by the govt. to help poor people residing in villages to excercise their right to education. But, at the same time i am a skeptic for such promises that we hear, and read about day in day out from the politicians.
But looking at the efforts that have been put up at this particular village to literate the young i was in tears of happiness. there is hardly any electricity, meager govt. money, poor medical facilities. But there are lots of kids being educated to primary level education. The place where it happens are called ‘Anganwadi’ and the people are anganwadi workers. though they are govt. employees but they share no laziness and arrogance like we are accustomed to from the babus of british raj. some of them have been students of the same village and have come back to teach the next generation. some are not formally educated but volunteer their skills and time. i could see so many future doctors, lawyers, scientists, journalists, entrepreneurs, in front of my eyes. and this was no uptown school. no fancy teaching aids, no worries of ‘status updates, facebook, gadgets, fine dine etc’ just simple living and high thinking. I was jostled back to urban reality at the roar of our vehicle, but those sights and happiness will never fade away.
