Rishikesh backpacking post #2 – Ganga Aarti ( best free event )

Rishikesh is not just famous for its adventure sports. It is home to the great Ganges.

Right on the banks of these Ganges is the Parmarth niketan Ashram. It is the biggest ashram in Rishikesh and the most popular school of yoga here, in the yoga capital of the world, Rishikesh. Every evening they perform the Ganga aarti which is must do thing if you have at least one evening to spare in Rishikesh.

It’s a free attraction. All you have to do is get yourself on the banks of the river, right outside the ashram at evening 6 pm. One has to cross Ram Jhula for reaching here. You can also cross Laxman Jhula and walk around 2kms to reach here. It’s pleasant walk by the river on the newly made promenade all through out.

It’s a pleasant walk thorough the old bazaar lanes and eateries filling you up with local sights, sounds and smells

As the adrenaline rush of the day wears off and muscles start to cramp, there is nothing more soothing than some rhythmic chanting by the Ganges. It is not only a treat for the body but also for your eyes. I am a fan of all the lamps and the drill performed with clock work precision. It makes for epic photo op.

Though not a firm believer of rituals, but those incantations along with smell of incense and smoke make for a very calming atmosphere.

the aarti lasts for about an hour. I was free to click as many pictures and videos, till I don’t disturb others. This is a welcome change from other snobbish ashrams and temples which bar photography of any kind.

Once the spectacle is over one can grab a meal at one of the beautiful cafes on the walk way back.

Pro tips :

Walk from Laxman jhula to Ram Jhula on foot. It is worth it. At least cross Ram Jhula on foot, again, ‘full wasool’

Earlier the better, if you have to click good pictures.

Respect other’s space. Not everyone over there is a shutter bug.

Thanks for dropping by. Peace.
